About Me

I’m so excited you’re here! Welcome, My name is Katey 🙂 I’m in my late 20s and I live in Chicago, Illinois with my two rescue pitties and my fiancé, Jesse. I grew up in the Chicagoland area. My childhood is always interesting to write about because I usually think of it in the context of my father. See when I was a kid, my dad was one of my favorite people but he was also in a wheelchair. I didn’t really know what that meant at the time, but I knew it was different. Gradually, as I grew up, I came to understand the complexities of his life and the disease he had – Multiple Sclerosis. I was an only child and my mom was his full-time caregiver. As a kid, when I wasn’t playing outdoors I spent a lot of reading and writing. While our life wasn’t the easiest, I cherished every moment I spent with my dad. Growing up with a chronically ill parent wasn’t easy, but it prepared me in a lot of ways for the current situation I find myself in, and for that I am grateful.

So a little more about me? Right after earning my Bachelor’s degree, I decided to move to Paris to pursue my Master’s Degree in Global Communication. I lived, studied, and worked in Paris for almost two years and did a lot of traveling during my free time. Now that I struggle with my health, I am so grateful I took a chance on myself and lived abroad!

After finishing up my education, I moved back to Chicago and started working full-time. I’ve bounced around full-time jobs for the past 5 years, holding a variety of similar titles: Marketing Assistant, National Communication Manager, Marketing and Communication Manager. I never found myself inspired and happy working at a company. I’m not sure if it is the nature of the work or my anxiety, but I always found myself feeling burned out and uninspired.

In April of 2021 I was fired from my job for needing three months off for an accident. While initially really upset for being fired for a disability, I decided to take this opportunity and find my passion again! I finally have free time and I’m really excited to start blogging again and I hope that others will find something from my writing.

Leela

Oh, Sweet Leela. We adopted her in September of 2019 – I had been following Chicago Animal Care and Control Adoptable Dogs for a while and her sweet face popped up on my Facebook and I couldn’t get enough of her. It felt like fate. The spelling of my name was based on Katey Segal (who voices Leela on Futurama). Once I showed my fiancé a video of her melting into a volunteer’s lap, we rushed to the shelter to pick her up before closing time. This sweet girl has been such a blessing to our life. She can be stubborn and reactive, but I am appreciative of her wariness of strange men. We got her when she was about 11 months. She was originally found as a stray, adopted at a free event, and then quickly returned :(. Luckily we scooped her up and will hold on to her forever

Dooley

Dooley. My sweet Mr. Dooley Doo – a wonderful volunteer took him on a doggy day out and I couldn’t get enough of his quirky face and desire for constant love. His story is not an easy one. He was found abandoned in a freezing cold house with a small Chihuahua and fish tanks. Luckily a sweet animal control volunteer was able to convince Dooley to trust him with some McD’s. Mr. Dooley stayed at the shelter for three whole months and was finally pulled by a rescue where we then adopted him! The adjustment period was not easy – we felt like it was way more than we could handle but it was all worth it in the end. He is the snuggliest dog I have ever met and he is the first one to come running when I am upset.
